How do people come up the asking price for their HD?

I've noticed this too. If you're getting a loan I doubt the banks care about the value of any mods. They're gonna look at the NADA/KBB value to loan you money on it.
I paid full NADA retail for my bike but it also had over $1500 worth of upgrades and it was stuff I liked. So i was alright with the price. But the dealer started out asking more than that for the bike. There are currently 3-4 Sportsters around my area that are 2-3 yrs old and people are wanting $6200-6600 for them. All I can say it good luck!

Formula for pricing your bike for sale:
Obtain the most current Blue Book available. Look up your year & model. Carefully examine the condition of your bike to match the Blue Book description. Ignore it. Tear out the page with your year and model and hold it up to the breeze. Note the direction of the breeze. Calculate the degrees and multiply by the GPS coordinates for your area. Then, add up every cent (including tires, oil, gas) that you have spent on the bike. Add $1000. Now, this is very important........wipe your butt with the remainder of the Blue Book. If the streaks are with the grain, add another $1000. If the book is now brown, set it on fire. If the smoke is grey, add another $1000. Cast the ashes into the river. If they float, add another $1000.
As you can see, the used-bike market is a highly scientific entity, and should not be entered into lightly, unless you really know what your doing.

Just wanted to show you all what I meant:
Here is one of list on CL:
====================
Harley Davidson Bike 2004 - $19800

2004 Harley Davidson FDXI superglide lowrider. Screaming eagle lowrider custom.
Too many custom updates to list (at least $20K in upgrades).
==========================
WTF, I don't get it
1. Why would someone put in $20,000 in a bike that cost less than $15k new.
2. 2009 Lowrider has a bigger engine and 6 speed than 2004
Damn, there are a lot dumb riders in HD land.

The ad doesn't make it very clear, but, is this a Screamin' Eagle bike from the factory? If it is, then it was a whole lot more than $15k new. I'm not saying it's worth his asking price now, but your premise is a little off.

I bought my '07 King Classic from a Craig List ad and thought I got a great deal considering it had only a little over 11k miles and has alround $4k in HD chrome added. There are 2 his and hers HD helments, 2 HD backrests and more. I gave 16k for it and had it delivered. What a deal! Is that not a fairly good deal?
