We used to use a product called "Creme". Just take off the tank, clean it out real good, let it dry and then put the Creme in and roll the tank around to get full coverage and let dry. Not sure if that's how they spelled it but worked way back then...Probably have something better now.

You could drain and remove the tank.Place some BB's in there along with some type of degreaser, solvent or carb cleaner.
Put the cap on and shake the hell out of the tank.Repeat until the junk stops coming out.
Remove the petcock then rinse the inside of tank with gas or carb cleaner.Disasemble the petcock and clean it.Use compressed air to blow out screen.Replace inline filter.

Cleaned plenty of these jokers on dirt bikes from back in the day, my old NightHawk and a few friends HDs. I use a few quarts of kerosene (diesel or fuel oil will work) and a handful of 1/4-20 nuts and swish, shake, roll etc... to knock the scale down. Then I treat the tank with Kreem sealer kit.

A friend that has done a few said this stuff works better.

Sorry man, I don't know about slime in the tank. ...but when I ride from GA to IL I get back up. It's like the gentle bumps in the road slowly tamp my crap until it's rock hard after a 13 hr ride. That's about all I know about being backed up on my motorcycle.

I pretty much use the same process, with the exception of lead shot (from shotgun shells) vs the 1/4" nuts. IMFUO, it get's into the "corners" a bit better.
The Kreme degreaser may work for your slime also. Spend the li'l extra, and get the 'tank protectant' with the Kreme kit.

I have done the same with some guys at work helping them clean up dirt bikes.

As for the Kreme that is good stuff when we re built my dads 79 shovel and put a new tank on we kreme the new tank to cover the bare metal inside and it came out great and no issues
