Default Nitrogen in tires??

I was picking up my bike today after the Stage 1 upgrades and Indy said that some guys when they bring their bikes in for service, tell Indy not to put air in the tires. It's because they put nitrogen in, instead of good ol free air. He said they said, it's supposed to reduce the the loss of tire pressure. Tell me he was pulling my leg.

We did this for racing, but only because N does not expand and contract (tire pressure fluctuations) like air. Don't know about the loss.

I'm not a scientist, but what I heard is..... Nitrogen particles are larger than air and can't escape as easily from porous (sp?) tires/tubes the way air can. And it's reaction to friction is different and doesn't heat up as much.

Either way, don't smoke around it.

Nitrogen does not change pressure in the tire with weather change(temp)/or elevation which is why Aircraft tires are filled with nitrogen. Also like above nitrogen molecules are larger thus less chance of penetrating/leaking like regular old free air. A local tire chain has been offering it around here for about two years now for cagers.

I personally think its just yet another biggest and best marketing thing. Just my two cents i saved with FREE AIR

be careful filling the tires with nitrogen will void your warranty, unless it is filled by genuine harley mechanics at a dealership. the screaming eagle nitrogen will void your warranty regardless of who puts it in.

If you want to learn more about what nitrogen can do check out www.getnitrogen.org it will tell you all about it. I manage a local tire store that does install nitrogen for customers. I run it in my bike and it does help stablize tire pressure and I run it in my car up here in New England it helps keep the moisture down inside the tire and help prevent wheel rust.

The use of S/E nitrogen is for off road use only, not legal for street use.
