Advice for riding doubles

I had a 1986 superglide . I rode 2 up on that bike all over the place.. Kansas City to L.A.
, Dallas, Charlotte, Atlanta, Pittsburg, NYC. You get the idea.
I put a very nice Corbin touring seat with back rests. Better shocks. Nice sling over bags and another bag that mounted behind the back rest. We did most of our stops in the tent at camping sites.. ah the good ole days.
You said trips like 100 miles or is that 1,000 miles.. for 1oo miles that is nothing not even two hrs on a bike. if you are talking 1000 miles That would probably be a 11/2 day trip on a Sporty.
I have friends that have a nightster (sp) they go all over the place on that bike. They just got back from Chicago , rode up their and back on it. They are younger so I don't think it bothers them very much.

If you're going to limit yourself (for now at least) to 100 mile trips, keep the Sportster. New rear shocks (Progressives) and a backrest is all you need. Maybe a new seat.
She's still new to this and may change her mind again. If you like the Sporty, there's no reason to go to the expensive of a bigger bike. At least for now.
Once she shows she'll stick with you, and wants to go to some of those rallys 1000 miles away, then would be the time to consider trading up.
Just my .02

If you are going to up grade I would also look at the Road King Standard. The frame change and front wheel configuration makes the bike steering real light but with the touring comfort.

Thanks for the input from everyone. I do have progressive shocks. I guess I just need to get out there and put some major miles on it. It just doesn't seem to fit two people very well. Plus I really, really want a RK.

Well then, if you really, REALLY want the RK, the only thing standing in your way is your wallet and the wife.

Other than the riding position (whether you personally like it or not), and the weight when pushing the bike around a garage or into a parking space, there really is no "downside" to the RK. My office is quite literally, out in the middle of nowhere. There's a 35mph curve coming in to work. I have taken it progressively faster every day to find the lean limits of my RKC. Let's just say that it is more than nimble enough for any speed I would ever ride above posted limits.
My wife really likes the seat and back rest too.
Get one.
