Default question on helmets

I started out riding with a full face, and while I like the protection, they just plain suck in the spring/summer months. So I picked up a half shell DOT helmet. My question is, the helmet is properly fitted and secured with the chin strap, but it seems like this helmet would easily be moved in an impact, or any sudden motion. Is that normal of half shells because there is no "tether" on the front and back of the head like a full face has? Even if I make the strap "o my god tight" with enough pressure, the helmet will still move back and forth. Thoughts?

D rings are the best way to secure a helmet. A lot people put clips instead. Get a comfy helmet. Try An ACC carbon fiber helmet from Carbonfiberhelmets.com. That is all I wear.

I have a DOT 1/2 helmet and it doesn't move as you are describing. Are you sure it is the right size?

well I am pretty sure its the right size. When I tried them on , I kept going till I found one that "hugged" my head, but wasn't overly tight. I guess what I am saying is, it just doesn't seem as snug and secure as a full face. Only way to get it close is to make the strap very tight so that it pulls down on the helmet.

You might want to try a different brand. They aren't all shaped the same so you need to find one that is not only the right size but the right shape for your head. I use an ACC half and the company was very good in helping me make some adjustments to make it fit perfectly.

I had to try several types before finding a beanie that fit. I had a Advanced Carbon Fiber Helmet, but it did not fit well.
It seemed shaped for a very round head. I ride a novelty now complete with ODOT sticker from Ebay.

The basic test is to put the helmet on. Hold the helmet tight and then try to move you head left to right. If you can move your head inside the helmet you should have bought the next size smaller.
A good 1/2 helmet will be DOT rated only. A very good full and 3/4 helmets will be DOT/SNELL rated.
