Chrome on FXD custom models

Hi folks.
How good is Harley's chrome? I'm about to upgrade my Sporty to an FXD, and have been looking at a very cool 2007 Superglide Custom. It looks great with all that chrome, but I wonder if anyone can help me with a couple of questions.
First, are the chrome engine casings and triple-trees still the same alloy as the standard Superglides, or have HD had to use steel in order to get a good bond for the chrome.
Second, how longlasting are those chrome finishes on Harleys? Chrome is quite a porous finish (despite its appearance) and I'd be gutted if I found all the extra shiny bits starting to pit and bubble after a few years. Having ridden for about 30 years I'm used to having to polish things like handlebars and mirror stems, but I've never had a bike with chrome engine casings on it. It's also been decades since I've had a bike with chrome wheels, but I do remember that the old Triumphs and Nortons had problems with rusting wheel rims.
Thanks a lot.
Jon
