Over Pants

I have both, chaps are great in th summer and you can take them off quickly when you get where you are going. If I wear my leather pants in the warmer months I have to remember to bring my spatchla to get my ***** off my inner thigh.

Leather overpant are just a little too much for me. I come out overpant moist because they don't vent air very well. It's like wearing rain gear you just don't get the air flow and get wet from your own body.

Chaps are just plain goofy looking, especially when worn over blue jeans and they don't protect your rear end at all. Leather overpants give much better protection and will keep you dry during an unexpected rain. I have a pair of Chilhowee leather touring over pants and they seem to be holding up fine and the price was good too.
The Chilhowee leather over pants aren't as good of quality as Langlitz, but they don't cost an arm, leg and your first born either. Fox creek used to make leather overpants and they were good quality, comparable to Langlitz for about 1/2 the cost, but they quit offering them last year so the choices for leather overpants are limited. Anyhow, that is my $0.02 on the subject.

I went the textile route instead of leather. Usable in both cold and warm, removable liner and removable armor. Also makes great rain gear.
I have the Firstgear HT Overpants. I might have to break down and get a pair of the Mesh-Tex for the warmer months here in Florida but the HTs are good up to the 80s.

What do you guys have against Chaps - they are very comfortable, lots of styles available, and they work. Not sure why the negative attitude - my wife and every other women I have talked to loves guys in them.... so what gives?

That's what Frogg Toggs are for. Chaps are great for protecting your legs from flying road debris and keeping warm down to a certain temperature. They're not rain gear, and they're not for really cold weather. Just like I own several pairs of gloves for different conditions, I own several different things to cover the rest of my body with in different conditions.

The cold riding is kind of what I was thinking about since I am in South Dakota and ride until late November. Also my jeans flapping in the wind on my legs gets annoying on longer rides so I thought this may help with that as well. Chaps just don't look like they would be as warm in colder temps with your crotch exposed to the air. Then as many have mentioned the overpant will keep the boys dry in that unexpected rain shower.
