I guess I don't stop much once I get going.

vulhalla,

The master cylinder was full of fluid when the brakes were new, as the pads wore and the pistons moved out, fluid from the mastercylinder displaced the area in the caliper behind the piston. The empty space in the reservoir should have a slight vacum where the fluid was before the pads wore out. Just collapse the pistons back into the caliper and replace your pads.
