I've also had all kinds of road debris bounce off the engine guards instead of my shins (retread, board from broken shipping pallet). Even an empty cardboard box or plastic bag blowing in the wind can pull your foot off the peg at 70MPH.

That said, I wish I'd bought the Lindby bar instead of the HD. I like the look better, and there's flat part you can use as another footrest.
How about avoiding trash on the roads? Do you seriously think that that guard will do anything for you in a side impact from a cage? Hey if it makes you "feel" all warm and fuzzy go for it. Reality has a way of smacking you up the side of the head. There is little or no protection in impacts. Engine guards were designed for lay overs and thats about it. I had to peel one off a riders foot and leg after a simple parking lot crash that happened at maybe 10 mph last summer.

If you think you might need them, then you do.

Have them on my 1200 custom. Saved my chrome a couple of times. I don't expect them to do much for me in an impact though. I'll definately put them on my next bike. Its worth it that one time you drop your bike in the driveway.
