you guys arguing about serving and protecting.....
the very nature of their job is to 'serve' the public good, might not be good for you specifically, but for the good of all in general.
as far as protecting, that doesn't mean standing guard in front of your door all the time, by enforcing the laws that the courts have decided are 'good for us', they are in fact 'protecting' us. again, you might be the recipient of something not so good, but if you are the one doing something wrong, then they are protecting the rest of us from an unintended consequence of your actions.....

Hey Billp...
In my nearly 50 years on this rock I've yet to figure it all out! What I do know...when I see a cop in my mirror I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling, nothin like Ahhh yes, I'm safer now! Its more like oh crap, was I speedin, is my tag expired, did I touch the yellow line, do I have my wallet, are my pipes too loud etc etc etc!
And respect is something earned, not something you just hand out at will. And if I ever am in a jam and need a cop, if one happens to be around it still would not be a matter of respect. It would be more like appreciation & grattitude.

This isn't regarding a motor officer but one morning I am out cruising down the hiway, traffic was lite, a beautiful, perfect riding day, and so I'm cruising along way over the speed limit.
I check my mirrors and a RCMP chase car is on my 6 , he has not lit up the lights and so I figure he's got me,... no point in slowing now... He followed for a few minutes then passed and gave me a head nod and a wave. Maybe he wanted to get home to take his bike out?????

All I said was, there is no mandate (meaning there is no legal obligation) for police to protect the individual. The United States Supreme Court upheld that thinking in 2005 (see link provided above, that you apparently missed, or conveniently chose to ignore).
I certainly do not think those serving in the LAPD are idiots. Maybe the bozo that put that on their cars is, but I have no personal knowledge of that. Maybe they should have thought about it more before putting it on their cars for "Adam 12".
All I'm saying is, if you wait for the police to protect your *** in a bad situation, you are sure enough going to be a victim.
As far as "knowing everything" goes. After serving in law enforcement for close to 30 years, I don't claim to know everything. But I think I have a little more knowledge that those of you that watch too much TV and THINK you know everything.
BTW, I'm not the only LEO that has tried to educate people to this fact.

I still think I had a blast with LAPD that night. We were all just boys havin some fun and breaking the law! I was just trying to show that they are just like everyone else trying to blow off some steam once in a while...plus I got to see t*tties faster not having to stop!

LEO's like every other group of people.. Good ones and bad ones. They do see the worst of humanity , more so than most people could even imagine, I think the good ones don't get to jaded and have an outlet of some kind to let off steam. The others take it out on everyone else, including their own,.. atypical a$$holes (got them in every walk of life, every group of people you can think of).
imo, most LEO are pretty decent to civilian bikers, 3 piece patcholders are used to the hassle though.
I've been stopped for speeding, non dot helmet and couldn't find the insurance card. Let me go with out a even a warning ticket. That was my last experience with being stopped by the man.
