She must just love you for having to sit on those metal grommets every time the two of you go for a ride. My wife looked at it and then looked at me saying, "...don't get any ideas...!"

I got the wife the big and thick Touring Pillion seat, and Touring backrest that I put on when she rides.
This mod is for my comfort (back support) and looks only!!
Its great on my back, better than the support I get from the big Touring pillion seat. (broke L4 in back yrs ago, so I love its comfort and looks)!
I cut the foam at a angle toward the rear so theirs no way it was meant to be a seat to ride on.
Plus the spots could pull lose or get snagged and tear out from sitting on them as they are also pressed through the foam 1/4" inner liner.
thanks.

Not a bad Idea;
But I believe the structural integrity required to make a box that would hold up to the rearward forces that would apply while accelerating would really stress most hinge systems.
Such a system would be required to bolt on to the base plate which is plastic.
Also would have to small enough to leave room for foam around it to still be a good back rest and then add a latch system.
If all above was met then you might get a couple pair of gloves and sunglasses in there, and hope it held up...
I am not trying to rain on your idea, I am just brain storming the Idea to see if it would be practical.
I spent about 2hr designing, cutting and trimming. Then worked with trim shop and ended up with $135.00 material and labor. plus my time.
