Default Harley Davidson and future epa/smog restrictions

How will future epa/California smop restrictions affect current Harley Davidson owners? I was shooting the breeze with a service advisor at the local HD dealer, and he made the comment that in 2008 we will have to get our bikes smogged. (Not sure if it will affect non California emmission bikes) Im not sure he knows what he is talking about, but still I though i should put it out there and see what you guys think.

Would this affect all bikes or only to a certain year, like pre 08 would be exempt.

And how would that affect purchasing aftermarket parts? Would owners still be able to purchase tunners, pipes and such?

Would this turn the cycle parts bussiness kinda like auto performance parts? (cat back exhaust and smog legal parts)

I know the epa has been up Harleys *** about pipes and slip ons. Would all performance parts be moved to third party.

Sorry kind of a question and a rant at the same time

The EPA establishes emissions limits for all vehicles and updates these periodically. When a vehicle is designed the manufacturer must certify that the stock vehicle meets the limits for that year. It is now and always has been illegal to modify any vehicle so that it no longer meets the emissions standards it was certified for. But there are very few states that actually test motorcycles to see if they still meet the limit.

So you will continue to do whatever you want as long as you still meet the limit for your particular year vehicle or as long as no gov't requires testing of your bike.

New models will probably see more catalytic converters, less carborators etc.

I was told yesterday by the dealer that is working on my bike, that HD is doing away with the SE line of exhaust and are dealing with the EPA on the noise and emmisions stuff. Not real sure what will be in store for HD in the fiture.

Your right I heard that too. I know out here in california HD cant put any exhaust not even screaming eagle on any bike. And on Carb Models nothing at all not even aircleaners.

Speaking on the noise issue. On PCH and The 133 Hwy in laguna beach there sits a reserve police officer with a decible meter. Flaging down Harleys and making them idle next to him with the decible meter. He has even been getting press in the local papers. He must not have a harley i smell a metric rider.....

Standard Laguna Beach. Well, there's plenty other coastal places to ride than Laguna Beach. The place is filled with alternative lifestyle freaks and drug achieving ex-hippies, not to mention poser surfers. San Clemente, down south, is biker friendly and has world class surf. Huntington Beach is also a good stop.
