LA, Chicago, etc., are scary. The others are just beautiful.

I drove that road in a car and you are right about the drop offs, I am planning on doing it on the bike this June. I also drove route 50 accross Nevada that trip. I did not see another car for over an hour on a Friday evening. Cruise control @ 90 mph.

Being followed by a 16 year old chick that's texting her friends - that's scary...

I got a kick out this one. Definitely a report from a bean counter.
The scariest route of all may be Interstate-15 between California’s Cajon Pass (near Los Angeles) and Las Vegas. The route isn’t especially twisty or desolate road, yet it’s the deadliest stretch of interstate in the entire nation, especially after dark when people are racing back and forth between L.A. and Vegas. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, 173 crash-related deaths occurred on this 207-mile stretch of interstate during one recent five-year period.

I admit, there are places between the two without guard rails, and several spots where the road narrows to 1 lane. But it's not that scary.

The only time I felt unsafe was last year.
It was raining, almost dark, and I had to cross Independence Pass to with the temp around 32 degrees. Lucky for us we got down the pass just before it was completely dark.
We crossed over Berthoud Pass year before last. It was cold, raining, sleeting, fog so thick that you couldn't see 10 feet, no guard rails and scattered rocks the size of basketballs in the road. That was the most white knuckled ride that I've ever been on.

I've done the Big Sur ride and the Hawaii ride and didn't find either scary. The only scary thing about the Hawaii ride is when I had to return the bike to go home. Oh wait, that was sad, not scary.

Big city interstates with a zillion people talking on their cellphones, and the deer crossing the road in the mountains are way scarier than any of those roads.

AMEN!!!! Went through there in 1990 & then in 1996. I thought we'd fall in some and have to call AAA to come pull us out.

I asked brother-in-law when we got into Wisconsin what the hell was up with the toll roads and he said the money was used for road repairs. I told him someone was pocketing most of it from what I could tell.
