Wind buffeting solved!

I have the standard height quick detach Harley windshield on my 99 Softail Custom, and I ended up cutting it around where it fits over the head light. That let me lower it down to where the lower clamps are below the lower triple tree. I also extended the slots a little in the top clamp mounts to angle the windshield back a little more. Both things helped, but I still get a little buffeting, mostly in a cross wind. A lot better than it was though. As said, I think most of the buffeting comes from under the windshield, and over the tank. If you get the windshield low enough that you are getting clean air around your helmet, it well stop the buffeting.

I got a memphis shades rio grande, cut it down for a custom fit so i'm just looking over the top - finally got it to just about zero buffeting ... nice to have the shield in 20* and 35 mph wind gusts

Have to Call BULL CHIT on Ur findings.............
I,,, after Yrs of reseach,,, on my own have found the bufffering comes from down below not over the top or side......
I've cut my shield down 3 times trying to defier it and so far nothing helps it as it come from below and not over the top...
I havent tried the FANGES yet but have read they work,,, but their UGLY.....IMO>...
I am an EX machine Repairman and I know how to do studies of existing problems to resolve them......
The buffering from the shield on Heritages and Road kings have been around for Yrs, it still baffles me that MOCO can't or hasn't resolved it,,, but they haven't....
I've cut My shield 1 1/2", then 2 1/2" and finally 3 1/2" off,,,, seeing very little diffenence in any of the Heights...... Except bugs hitting me at the 2 1/2 cut more than stock or 1 1/2" cut....
I have found U close Ur legs against the tank that that action will stop most buffering.... which is kind of what the fangs will do on the lower shield.......

Dont have a wind problem with mine. Some wind from around the tank, but if your moving there is wind , thats what motorcycles do. I thought that was one of the reasons to ride in the first place was to get some wind in your face.

I too think the fangs are ugly, but I'm going to put some on anyway, because I like touring.
I tried to put some fangs on last summer, but then my windshield wouldn't fit back on and I was on a trip and didn't have tools to modify them so I had to take them off.
What I will have to do is use a cutting disk on my dremel tool, and cut a 1/4" slot in the tops of the fangs so the windshield mounting plates can slide into them. It'll probably look goofy, but it should work.
Has anyone here mounted fangs with a Memphis windsheild or other non-HD windshield? I would be interested to know how you made it work.
Another alternative, is to try a Jack's Flaps vest. That way you don't have to modify your bike. Check out the video he has at http://www.jacksflaps.com

The Fangs may be ugly but they do work. Std. Height Shield with Fangs eliminates 90% of the buffeting on my open face helmet and 100% on my full face helmet. The other option is a Std+4" Shield and that gets rid of 100% of the buffeting no matter what helmet; but like others here I prefer NOT to be looking through a window when riding my bike . . . but then again I do like to be able to read the road signs.
