Pulled over and ticketed for a non-DOT lid or not?
What would the LEOs do where you're from? In BC a novelty lid will suffice, in AB it must be DOT approved.

Standards and Certifications
Here's a brief discussion of the three most common helmet safety standards and certifications: DOT, Snell and ECE 22.05. More information can be found on the Motorcycle Safety page.
The most common certification procedure for motorcycle helmets is outlined in the U.S.A. is the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) standard. A listing of motorcycle helmets meeting DOT standards is available for download from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
To obtain the right to place the "DOT" sticker on the back of a motorcycle helmet, the manufacturer must meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) known as FMVSS 218 (49CFR571.218). FMVSS 218 describes in great detail the requirements for "DOT" certification of all helmets sold in the United States for use by motorcyclists. Helmets that do not meet the minimal DOT standards may not be sold as "motorcycle helmets" in the U.S.A.

Try to prove that case to the NY State troopers who run checkpoints including helmet checks.

Actually this is a big can of worms ... DOT can be misconstrued in many ways.. Personally glad Florida has No helmet law but if going to wear a helmet and serious about protecting your head against injury get a good helmet that meets ANZI standards or might as well wear a beanie with a spinner on top for all the good it will do you...

Gee whiz. Ebay usually has lots of sellers with DOT stickers, usually in 4-packs. Maybe a couple of bucks each.
I mean, if you repaint your helmet or something, they'd come in handy?

there are many reports of troopers on the Dragon issuing tickets or holding the biker until a DOT helmet was produced.
