Default Cook County (Illinois) tax question

I may be buying a bike tomorrow from Woodstock HD in McHenry County but I live in Cook County. Would I have to pay the full tax here in Cook as well? I'd rather not pay tax 2x.

No, you pay sales tax just once. But they will calculate it to the Cook County rates where you live, not where you purchase. At least that's the way it is in Florida. I have seen some other posts to that effect before so other states might be the same. Either way you only pay sales tax one time.

The last car I purchased was in DuPage County. Dealer charged me Dupage county tax. Cook County sent me a bill for the difference since I live in Cook County. I don't know if all dealers handle it this way, but that's the way it happened to me.

You honestly think you can get away from Richie Daley getting his pound of flesh? hahhahahahahahahahahhahaha

Seriously... Cook County will send you a bill like rh8234 said. I bought a car in McHenry eons ago and I was sent a nice little bill.

From what I have heard Chicago/Cook County has some of the highest taxes in the country right now... It costs a lot of money to put 74 year old corrupt scumbag governers in jail. Now if only they could get Rich Daley....

You should just tell the dealer what county you live in and they will compute the tax from that county. You then only have to pay it once.

Now that you have decided to hold off for a year on a bike (according to your other thread), I'd recomend that you quit wasting the dealers time and getting their hopes up on a pending sale.

It's one thing to shop and know what you want. It's another thing to mislead them.

I promise, those sales reps don't live at home and have help from others with their credit. They need to focus on customers that will be putting money in their pockets.
