Preride inspection poll
#21
I do the walk-around visual inspection of the bike before every ride. If it's had time to get cold, I take a moment to focus on the contact patch and can judge if I need to put a gauge on to check the pressure (I can visually spot underinflation at about 3 pounds.) I used to check oil after each ride, but now I have a sense of what it's going to be and check it infrequently. I look at the sight gauges on the master cylinders as I walk around, but never actually check the fluid.

I'll keep an eye on the oil, tires, and such on a regular basis, but not every day. Here's what I do for my every day ride. Make sure the clutch works and snaps back. Make sure the throttle snaps back when released. Pull the clutch back in and start it up. Make sure each blinker works. Make sure the front and rear brake work and disengage when released and the brake light works. Turn the front wheel through its full range of motion, left and right. By the time I back out of my spot, the bike has been running about 20 to 30 seconds, so then I put it in gear and go.
I pretty much do the same thing. I check the tires, oil etc on a regular basis.
I will start it up, make sure I have signals, brake and headlamp. I am out.

I check the tire pressure each week, oil level a couple times a week. Check the lights and turn signals and do a walk-around inspection before each ride.

I've got to admit that I've been lax about checking tire pressure. The front end felt "funny" coming home the other night so I checked it, 16psi in the front, 24 in the rear. Lesson learned. I keep an eye on the oil pretty religious and check the blinkers if I haven't ridden in a few days; usually by setting the hazzards after I pull out and park so I can go shut the garage door.
One of these days I'll re-connect the garage door opener hanging from the ceiling.

riding for 20 yrs and my pre ride check consists of:
click, click, push...yup, it started. Let's roll.
I strip every one of my scoots down to bare frame every winter. Just a habit from when I was young.
