A buddy and I were discussing riding to work in cold weather (not too cold, like 20-30).

He says you are better going the fast route, like the freeway (65mph+), because despite the wind you will spend less overall time out in the cold.

I feel that the higher wind speeds and wind chill will make you colder faster, and even if it takes another 20-30 min to take the side roads (25-35 mph) overall you'd feel less uncomfortable.

What say you?

 

I'd opt for a little longer route at slower speeds when it's real cold. Heated gear also makes all the difference.

 

If your protected by a windshield, face shield or windproof clothing (but minimal insulation) then riding fast for less time is the way to go.
If your wearing heavy insulation (but not very windproof) then you will stay warmer riding slow.

Windproof, insulated and heated gear and you can be toasty for a long time at any speed.

 

20-30 and I think of Ice, when I rode in the cold I took the most traveled routes, which were most likely to be clear of Ice or other cold weather hazards. Back roads with trees and shade hard to see whats on the road main roads open and easy to see.

but I would write MythBusters and see if they could figure it out for us hehe

My votes with eric, I can make sure I am warm for what ever duration my ride is, and am way more interested in roads that will be free of ice!

I think you get colder going faster regardless of the windshield issue. However you are in the cold longer if you take the slow way. I'd rather take the slow way.

What kinda scoot ya on? How are ya geared-up? Fairing? Shield? ect...

 

Easy solution....

If it's in the 20's or below leave the damn bike at home....

Enclose yourself in a good 4-wheel drive vehicle, turn up the heater, and head on down the road.
