I'm not trying to pick a fight, but, seriously, why should I feel like I need to save Harley? They're a company just like any other. I already have a Harley, so I'm set. What effect will it have on me if they go t.u?

Well for one thing, when HD quits making parts what will you do when something breaks? Or do you just happen to be a machinist?
Let’s not forget the flood of employees who will be flushed into the job market. Are some of them more qualified than you? Might they be willing to do your job for lower pay? Maybe your boss will fire you to hire a more qualified person (ex-HD employee) at lower pay. HD is our hobby; if you care about it you should support it. Thousands would lose jobs if HD goes under, and for you to not care makes you an a$$#0!* in my book!

I don't think Harley's going anywhere. Everbody's hurting. I have to take a 10% paycut starting April 1st. It sucks but at least I have my job. I've been spending my money on with Harley for years. Will keep it up too as long as I can afford too.
Things will get better.

H-D is not my hobby, riding an H-D is my hobby. There is a distinct and important difference there.

I also do not believe that H-D going out of business is going to make parts impossible to get. You are aware there are hundreds of aftermarket parts suppliers, right? In fact, if H-D were to stop producing replacement parts, those companies' business would grow. The free market abhors a vacuum. As an Evo rider I can't really depend on them for parts anyway.

Of course I don't wish for hundreds of employees to lose their jobs. Saving people's jobs was not the OP's rationale anyway. The OP's point was that we all owe some sort of loyalty to H-D. My point is that we do not. I don't owe them any greater loyalty than I owe Chevrolet, the manufacturer of my truck. I owe H-D nothing and I don't understand the rationale of those who think I do.

Harley doesn't get any of the money from stock sales....the stocks are already in private hands - your purchase goes from your pocket to some other dude's pocket who probably bought the share at $30.......Someone else wrote it in this thread but its true: the only way to save harley is to buy their products (bikes etc); buying their stock does very little for their bottom line.

On a side note; pretty much anyone could have seen their share price drop coming years ago (I know I did and I'm no stock guru thats for sure).....the average age of a HD owner has been increasing by one year - every year. That pretty much means that the same people have been buying bikes and trading them in for years. Very few new riders are choosing HDs and eventually us old timers will be too old to ride and will stop buying bikes....thats when HD will finally fail unless they do something drastic to update their lineup and image to attract new, younger customers. The V-Rod might help but based on sales #s for that model I doubt it...combine that with the new EPA pressures on the V-Twins and it pretty much spells disaster.....

well for one think he could buy a better replacement part than the one that broke from a company that makes them in the US....like S&S or Baker.....HD has never given a crap about you or their bikes once they are off warranty.....try to get a dealer to service your shovelhead and you'll see what I mean.
