Can't ride for at least 6 weeks

In 03 I brought home a brand new Ultra Classic, a few days later I had hernia surgery. All I could do for about 5 weeks was look at and polish it. Worse part was, it was about this time of year.

I haven't been able to ride or drive for almost six weeks due to my own injury- I rolled my car and broke 2 vertebrae in my neck on Jan 29 this year. I go in on Thursday to see how my healing is going and if I will be able to drive/ride/go back to work. The worst part is sitting around all day with little to nothing to do.

Wow, all these posts of other guys' injuries. I thought I was all alone. I'm a letter carrier and slipped on ice fracturing a bone in my lower back. The prognosis was 6-8 weeks but it's about 8 weeks now and doesn't seem to get better. I retired from being a cop in the worst neighborhoods of Brooklyn NYC for 21 years and never got hurt. I became a mailman and this is my third injury.
The orthopedist said no motorcycle or horseback riding and I do both. (I have 2 Harleys, a dresser & a Sportster) He also said I can't lift anything more than 5 lbs. While that is a great excuse for not taking out the garbage or going shopping it really sucks that I can't lift either bike. I am so tempted to go out on the bike anyway but I doubt that would be smart. Besides, any bump whatsoever would be painful and March is pothole season in NY!!
Whenever my Blue Knights Chapter has a meeting or a ride I pray the weather would be lousy so I wouldn't be the only one showing up in a car!! Selfish, ain't I.
Well anyway, glad to see I'm not the only one. Misery loves company!!!

It does suck. The hernias also added to a lower back problem & made my back feel much worse. I was in Florida about 4 weeks ago on a 5 day golfing trip & I had to quit on the 8th hole at Greg Normans Tiburon Club on day 3. The back & grion were screaming. Got home & it was the hernias so I had them fixed & now the back feels 95% better. 2 more weeks & the doc should cut me loose again. I can't wait. To all the walking wounded, heal fast!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope it's your right ankle. Gettin' old is a bitch. I busted my right talus (a bone in the ankle) last September at the Rage show (opening night of the RNC). In a cast (non-weight bearing) for four weeks, then a walking cast for another four. I couldn't handle not riding. One nice fall Saturday after three weeks of hobbling around on crutches I had enough. I decided to see if I could get the bike of the jiffy stand...OK. Rolled 'er back a little...not bad. How 'bout out the garage...hmm. Gotta do it! Strapped the crutches on the saddle bad and off I went! I just had to be sure that when I stopped I leaned primarily to the good foot. I kept having images of getting stranded though. Once I got my walking cast and was able to actually walk on it, riding was no problem. Just throw on a rubber overshoe on the cast to keep the toes from freezing and go!
I got my cast off Halloween and couldn't walk without a crutch for another week, then I forced myself as my goal was approaching fast...deer hunting. No way I was missing that.
I've put on 30 pounds since I got the cast. Within the last couple weeks I've been able to start "jogging"...well it's a little more than a brisk walk. One foot is on the ground at all times. I'm sure it looks amusing as I hobble pretty bad trying to jog. I'm pretty good at walking though.
Good luck to you man...I feel for ya. And hopefully you've got someone else around that can wait on you! I've broken my arm twice and that's nothing compared to only having one good foot. Broken arm you lose an arm...broken leg you loose a leg, and both arms to the crutches.

Man, we have a lot of cripples here. Including me. Had a bad fall last September, fell about 15 feet off a ladder onto concrete. Fractured two bones in my lower back and completely smashed my right wrist apart. Have had two repair jobs on the wrist and have just found out that they will have to operate again as the screws and plates are interferring with any wrist up and down movement and causing full time severe pain. Doctors office called today and said that they looked at the recent x-rays a want to remove all of the metal hardware April 2nd. Dammn.. . just when it's getting about 6 weeks from the start of the ridingseason. I had been thinking that I could ride if I could get the cruise on as soon as possible and even bought the adjustable backrest to help with the back. Cabin fever has set in and can't wait to get the new bike on the road. Maybe I'll forgo the operation untill late fall, it's almost more painfull waiting for the Spring riding weather to happen so I can get the new bike out and on the road.
