I'm in the same boat, except the DOD reg covering it changed a while back and the orange vest isn't mandatory anymore. It now says contrasting color. I still wear an orange vest to work just because it's easy. If I'm not going on base the orange vest stays at the house.

In Montana, we can wear whatever we want or don't want--no laws about it, as long as you're "publicly decent."
When I was in the Army, I had to wear all that stuff when riding on post. Didn't bother me.

At a minimum I wear a DOT helmet, steel toed boots, riding glasses and jeans. If the weather is cool or I'm going for more than a cruise, I have gloves, chaps, riding jacket and face mask.

Not always as much as I should.
Over the ankle boots, jeans, full face helmet, and ansi z81 spec. glasses anytime I ride. Usually a jacket (leather or mesh with armor), although I'll do shorter rides without to get some sun. Other gear is temperature dependent....

Boots, jeans, t-shirt, ear plugs, and glasses are the minimal. Weather determines if I wear more layers. Helmet if I feel like it. What I wear is my personal choice--it is not open to debate and I don't care what anyone else wears unless it is one of my kids.

Wear a novelty skid lid cause I'm used to it. In N.Carolina I wear a DOT helment cause they are pickey. rest of the helmet states just my skid lid. wear what the weather dictates, vest, jacket, or just a T shirt. Have to wear glasses cause I'm blind. Wear leather boots all the time anyway.

On a typical nice day a DOT 1/2 helmet, boots, jeans and a tee or long sleeve shirt.
If it is chilly I'll have on gloves and my 3-1 sweatshirt or a sweatshirt.
If it is cold I'll have on leather coat and chaps and gloves.

Over the ankle boots. Leather jacket, chaps for longer rides (more than just around town), gloves, sunglasses or clear glasses depending on the time of day and a 1/2 helmet and earplugs (even in no helmet laws states because I'm more comfortable with it on).
