Default Adding studs to a backrest...

Are there studs that can be added to a backrest by just pushing them throrgh the leather or a pre-drilled hole? Maybe a screw in type? My backrest is the smooth one & I'm trying to avoid buying a new one or taking mine apart to match the rest of the Heritage. TIA.

I couldn't find anything that works without taking the cover off. I'm not sure studs exist that can be added without removing the cover.

Remove the cover. It's the only way. It's not that difficult to do. You'll need a stapler to put the cover back together. Or make friends with a local upholstery shop and after you've put the studs in have them staple it.

If you decide to do it, make sure you purchase nickel plated brass studs. They won't rust on ya! Another good tip: When you get ready to take off the cover, first run a line of masking tape around the backrest in the area you want the studs. Then find the center of the tape, and mark off where you want the studs equidistant from each other. If the cover is leather, might want to use a awl to make your holes first......good luck!

Post 4 and 5 are the right ones. You can buy the studs at HD and several other places. I had to replace a stud off of my bag that was knocked off. I bought the wider P-Pad and back rest pad for my passenger that had the studs.

Want to go one step further, here ya go, other than that, as posted above. Just look at the back of it, where stapled, and you will be able to see where THEY started and ended. Just repeat, beings you are not replacing the foam, covering, etc.

I did the backrest on my 05 Heritage without any disassembly.

I used the two-prong half inch spot studs.

All it did was the the tool to cut the slots for the prong, insert the stud and bend the prong inside the material.

On my backrest, there was enough flex in the material that I could press from the outside enough to bend the prongs on the inside over.

Try pinching the material on your backrest...if you can pinch it...you can install them without anything special.

OK, thanks for all the suggestions. I may give it a try. I'm kinda board as I just had a double hernia repaired & I won't be riding for 4-6 weeks. Hopefully there wont be to many warm days in March in NY
