Stopping and Strarting on the up hill...

Generally, while holding the front brake, let the clutch out to the friction point (just when the engine begins to bog down)...let off the front brake and roll on the throttle. Takes longer to say it that it does to do it.
Especially on hills, I don't like taking either foot off the ground to operate the rear brake.

I learn to ride intown where there are hills, heavy traffic at times, stop and go traffic, stoplights, divided highways and general morons in SUVs. Starting and stopping can be a chore when learning and I have stalled it a few times at first. I was taught front brake, clutch gas with the friction zone. Also I try to stop at the flattest or least amount of incline on the hill and I give space between me and the car in front if they start to roll backways. ( all ready had a dump truck do that to me and scared to poop out of me).

I try to always go down hill When thats not convieniant, hold the front brake tight, bring 'er up to 'bout 4800 RPM, let go of the clutch real fast. Your back tire should start spinning, keep hold'in the brake. You should know that you'll have a little smoke coming from the rear tire area. When the traffic clears in front of you, hold on tight and let go of the front brake[sm=gears.gif].
If this don't work out for you, try what the other guys posted. Easier on your back tire anyways...

I ride in traffic on hills in San Francisco every day.
Rear brake, just put 1 foot down when stopping.
Give a little gas, and as said before... as engine bogs, release brake.
If not in traffic, then its business as usual. It's those slow 5-10' movements that you really need to be careful with.

Rear brake at every intersection. I only need one foot on the ground to keep the bike stable (even two-up). Bike is always in first gear with clutch in, that way I'm ready to accelerate at any moment, and we all know too well that sometimes you have to whether the light is green or not (cagers!).

It's kinda like those driveways that are sloped up, only there is no garage in the way.......

I agree with you zombie, with both feet on the ground and first and second fingers on the front brake lever and the others and thumb on the throttle. Slowly throttle and release the clutch in the friction zone and slowly release the front brake. Oh make sure you have a gap between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Two feet down on the ground, and front brake.
Practice smoking the rear tire on level ground.
Two finger front brake, release clutch slowly while throttling up.
Keep front brake on, feet down, and take a 1000 miles off your tread.
Get creative, walk bike sideways in circle leaving ugly black donut.
Once you get that down, hills are a cinch.
Oh...and ride safe.
Cheers

In traffic I just roll back real slow and gently place the rear of the bike on the bumper of the car behind me. This solves any problems taking off, saves on the clutch or brake. I see alot of these expressions in my mirror"[:@]" Not sure why I hope this helps.
