ORIGINAL: sedbiker62

I was 23. The year was 1985. I couldn't afford it then either.
Back then, Harley had an add campaign that went something like " If you have to justify it, it ain't for you ". I kinda took that to heart and took the plunge. Bought a 1974 AMC Hornet station wagon for $400.00 for the times I needed a cage and paid $242.62 a month for 4 years to own a Harley. I never looked back.

I can relate, a bit anyway. I'm 26, and I just bought my first harley, an FXDBI. I live in Canada and they're a bit more expensive up here, even taking into account the exchange. I can definitly NOTjustifythis bike, at least not financially. I have a 99 cavalier that I just finished paying off, and so my logic is that the bike payment will take the place of the carpayment PLUS an extra $100. I had to take the loan out over 7 years at a not so great interest rate to be able to make the payments, and hopefully be able to still pay all the bills.

I've sacrificed some tho ... No more golf, rarely eat out, pack a lunch, no new clothes (unless really needed),

I also have no kids yet, and hopefully will be able to pay off the bike before that time comes.

Also, probably the biggest thing that makes it possible is my wife (common law) If there weren't two incomes, I wouldn't even be able to think about owning the bike now. Which means I'd better start saving for a 2-up seat on the bob, because that bike is as much hers as it is mine.

I was 25 when I got my first Harley. It was a used Sporty and had saved for a long time. I had been ridding for 15 years (yes I was 10 when I got my first bike) and it was a dream come true to finally get a Harley.

What it comes down to is what you can afford and what you can deal with until you get your HD. It will happen in time if that is truly what you want. I bought mine last year at 40 yo after saving for 20 years. It's true, if you want something bad enough the time will come.

One thing to remember about the answers you get here is, most people think about there own finances when answering these kinds of posts, not yours. They are deffinatly biased answers due to the fact you are on a HD forum.

I rode all different rice burners while I was saving for my Harley, but my bald head(at the time) was still in the wind. Everything from Suzuki, couple of Yamahas, and even a cool Honda cb750 old school chopper. I didn't care, I was ridin' and new sooner than later the time would come for the Harley.

Last thing to think about is what kind of harrasment you can take. If you ride rice you'll take siht from the Harley guys, if you ride Harley you'll take siht from the ricers. What can you handle?

The only thing that matters when buying a bike is YOU. It's your dough.

$99 a month for a 883 Sporty? Read how it really work, not that good of a deal.

Just saw a 2005 FXST, 1000 miles, $12,500. First day in the local paper.
