Vivid Black paint match??
#41
Agreed... there are at least fifty shades of black... and gray. You're in luck because I just went through this. I painted some fender filler panels to match my vivid black fender and bags.
I used DupliColor Perfect Match Universal Black. The part number is BUN0100 and it says "replaces DS100/T100". I topped it with their universal clear. It lays down pretty nice and doesn't have a tendency to run. Also dries quick and hard. Not soft like some paints.
It wasn't really necessary but I wet sanded and buffed the panels. It actually looks too good now because the factory paint has some orange peel. It is a PERFECT match for vivid black. An 8oz. can was about $7.00 at the local auto parts store.

The part numbers I want to use are as follows.
Dupli Color Black Sandable Primer Pt# DAP1698
Dupli Color Universal Black Pt# BUN0100
Dupli Color Clear Pt# DAL1695
Both the paint and clear say they are acrylic laquer, I just need to confirm the primer is suitable for the acyrilic laquer paint and clear I chose above.
Edit. Thank You for taking the time to post, I need to get this project started and completed asap so I can move on to other details.

Great... glad it helped you out. Yes, the DupliColor is acrylic lacquer. That's why it dries fast and hard. Paint like Krylon, Rustoleum, etc. is enamel and it stays soft.
I just tracked down the cap for the clear I used and it is BCL0125 Clear Top Coat (replaces DS125/T125). That shouldn't matter as long as it's gloss clear that you're using.
Sorry, can't help on primer as I didn't use any. I was painting over stock paint so I just scuffed it up. I'd hope that DupliColor's own primer is compatible with their paint but you're right to confirm.

Well, I picked up all of the supplies from work today.
I decided to go with the following products.
Dupli Color Adhesion Promoter Pt# CP199
Dupli Color Perfect Match Gray Filler Primer Pt# BPR0031 ( I would prefer Black Primer here, but wanted to stick with the Perfect Match Line of Products to ensure compatibility)
Dupli Color Perfect Match Universal Black Pt# BUN0100
Dupli Color Perfect Match Clear Top Coat Pt# BCL0125
I also bought 15 sheets of 3m sandpaper in 1000,1500,2000 grit in addition to the 220 and 400 that I already prepped for primer with.
Total was about $50 bux in supplies so far, and I already have the Megiaurs ultimate compound, and finishing waxes I like to use.
I will start a thread documenting the process....

This part has not been final sanded, compounded, only cleared.

DBU9700 GM Code WA8555, and IIRC it is Ford code UA.
the 9700 has a brownish hue to it, 9800 has a blue hue
you'd be amazed at all the shades of "black" out there
I just looked at Ford Trucks 2006 in my Mitchell's Refinishing Guide software, there are 5 variations of the UA (but UA by itself is pitch black) and there are 8 other "ebony" colors that popped up.
Damn I miss the days of "99L"

Go to a local ppg paint distributor, tell them the year, make and model of your bike. They will look it up in their catalog or they can call ppg to get the exact formulation. When I got vivid black for my bike it took the paint distributor a couple days to get the reply from ppg. They mixed for me and I painted my tour pack and lower fairings. Not cheap but it matches.
