Oncoming traffic and un-safe passing
#31
Personally, left is better. The problem isn't people not seeing you, it's them thinking they can make it. Them coming face to face to you before they have the car halfway into your lane discourages that thought. If it makes a differance in your ability to exit the road you're talking the differance between really, really f'd and just really f'd, but f'd is f'd.
There are always jerks that drive that way all the time. You can encounter them any time, any place. Most are not though. What causes them to make that mistake today could be something you couldn't possibly predict. Late for work yet again, wife rushed to the hospital, etc. Much of it is predictable though. It's the high school or local factory letting out. It's the road with few places it's possible to pass and this happens to be one of them. If it's a work commute stopping for a soda, hanging out in the parking lot talking to your buddies, killing 15 minutes might make a big differance.
There is also your choice in roads. It may be a U.S. Highway, but if it's the most direct route between two fair sized towns it's going to have a lot of traffic on it. Take the road less travelled that bypasses the larger towns for the smaller ones. You can still encounter them because it happens to be the most direct route for where they live, but most of the people in a hurry aren't going to be on that road.
