So you know the situation, youve never owned a harley but youre finally going to get one. Then you do. After owning a harley did it live up to all the hype and high expectations? Or after having it a while was it not that big of a deal? Be honest.

My first Harley was a used '76 Sportster. I bought it in '83 when there was no hype. The bike met my expectations and that's all that mattered.

I bought a new 1978 Low Rider and it was even more than I expected. I had ridden other makes for years but every time that I saw a Harley, I wanted one. I rode that first Harley until I bought another Harley in 1991. I have not been without a Harley since the first one in 1978 and I have never been disappointed with any of them.

When I bought my bike, I just wanted a bike, did not care what brand, But due to a divorce and other factors my credit was shot, no one would finance me, but HD took a chance and approved my loan, as far as owning a Harley, yes it exceeded my expectations, for the first couple of miles, then it was all about what mods to make to improve it.

I still have my first HD, its a 1996 Dyna Wide Glide. Its surpassed all of my expectations with 83,000 miles on it. Harley Davidson was still fighting for market share and to survive. Their build quality was second to none. Now, I am not so sure. I wouldnt buy any of their NEWER bikes because the quality isnt there anymore. Cast bottom ends, cheaper bearings, all for the greedy dollar.... F'EM
They have improved their frames, the fuel injection, and paint.

Hard to say. Three days after I took delivery it broke down due to the bad compliance fittings that year ('87) and was at the dealer for the next five weeks. They did a recall but the replacement manifolds weren't available yet. Not a great way to get started with the brand.

fxdwg. Ride one of the newer models. You will be surprised and impressed with the quality. Don't believe everything you read on this forum, or elsewhere. I, too, love the 1996 Harley but my '07 is one sweet machine.

I have rented an 06, 07, 08 Ultra and I'm not impressed at all. We will talk when I see Twin Cams hitting 150,000 miles to 250,000. I'll rent an 09, later this year....
I love my 99, Ultra too, but I know the motor will last even though I'll be putting out 100/100 at the crank, it wont out last my EVO. Will the new cranks handle that? I dont think so after watch two of my riding buddies rebuilding their SE110 after spend $35,000 grand on it. Not to mention their several break downs because of the fly by wire throttle...
