Some say you shouldn't use shoe polish on leather because it puts wax on the surface, which clogs its pores.

I use Doc Bailey's leather black on mine. Helps waterproof and cleans. Great for boots and saddlebags, as well.

The jacket I bought in 79 in still in the closet, Id still be wearing it, but it shrunk

The one I have now is 10 odd years old.

I wash & wear them.

Wash them in the rain, wear them until they dry out.

You could leave it alone to age gracefully or you could wash it in Woolite with your delicates, depends if you're a biker or a poser.

That's pretty much is my story also. My first "real" motorcycle jacket was a Harley Cycle Champ bought in 1978. Alas, it shrunk around the waist in later years. I now wear a 23 year old that seems as good as new. I did put some leather dressing on it after I had to wear it wet for three days of hard riding in hard rain. It probably did not need it.

Clogged pores What's going to happen on a dead animal's hide, zits?

I used shoe polish on my previous jacket, and the leather is still good after 15 years. The pockets are worn, so keys and change end up somewhere in the lining. A local leather shop (Hideaway for those folks around Dundalk MD) has a jacket treated half way with black wax just to show people how they can resurrect old leather.

Mink oil if it has gotten wet too many times and lost it's suppleness (and it's a great waterproofer too). Neatsfoot oil if it is really neglected and is so stiff that it feels like it's about to crack. Problem with neatsfoot oil is that you smell like a fuel truck for a week or so.

Suede or natural, not much you can do except let age gracefully and die with honor.

As mentioned in a previous post, thats a wives tale.
I use Kiwi Parade Black on my 10 year old boots, and still spit polish them.
Because I'm a poser.

I use Kiwi liquid with the sponge applicator on blemishes that show on the jacket, then top it off with mink oil.
Because I'm a poser. And my S@#$ looks good.

I've still got Gramps' WWII bomber jacket, and I use the same crap on that. It's what he did, and Gramps is always right. Damn thing looks like it was issued yesterday.
