vegas vacation
hello all, Im visiting vegas in april and Ive lived in wis. all my life with with no helmet law. Now i dont want this to become a helmet saftey thread as My personal choice here is not to where a helmet, period. Anyways I have a buddy that has a head trip carbon fiber novelty helmet with an added dot sticker. We all know these sit way lower on your head than the official dots and im wondering if anyone is familiar with nevadas johnny law, and the risk facor of getting stopped just by the looks of this helmet.

DOT in Vegas
Your odds are about 50/50. I know people that have been stopped for that (not cited just given a warning). I also know that some people have never been stopped. One thing, if you are stopped for some other reason, say speeding, then the odds of being checked go way up. So there you are, roll the dice and good luck!!!!

I've ridden there a time or two and never been bothered with my novelty helmet, it doesn't have a DOT sticker on it either. Like fishcop said, it's a roll of the dice, luckily I've always been on the winning side. Too bad I can't say the same for my time spent in the casinos.

Thanks for the info guys, now when i go to the harley dealer to pick my bike up do you think they will make me wear there helmet off the lot and give me a hard time about mine, or do they not even look that close. Ive never rented a bike before but ive heard there pretty strict on the whole helmet thing.

Why not buy a low fitting DOT approved helmet? A friend of my was stopped and ticket for a non-DOT helmet and the cop sat in the parking lot to make sure he did't walk around the block (yes he tried) and try and ride off. After an hour he finally got a hold of me and it was almost another 1 1/2 hours later before I got there with a DOT helmet for him...and I brought him my oldest helmet, gold metal flake with a green metal flake stripe down the middle. The cops and I were both on the ground laughing and my buddy was pissed, we laugh about it now...just wish I could find the pictures!!!

because my friend does not have a low riding dot helmet that i can borrow, and im not going to drop that kind of money for my own for 2 days in vegas that ill never wear again. Now i do know im rolling the dice and could end up paying more for a fine, but im really just trying to feel out the vibe the cops have there. If its a little relaxed unless your hot doggin around or if there pretty hard core about it.

Wonder if he would've towed a cage because of a broken seatbelt.

NO, the dealer in Vegas will NOT let you wear the fake helmet. They will make you wear a real DOT helmet or they will not rent to you. I have rented in Vegas 4 times over the past 10 years when out there.

That's what I would be afraid of... I grew up in WI not wearing a lid, but have been getting away with a novelty in VA. It's only a matter of time though...
