I used to wonder the same thing. Then a few years ago I was in a bike shop. The ride over had only taken about ten minutes but I looked like someone that had just stepped out of a shower. Another rider entered the shop but he looked like he had just stepped out of GQ magazine.

I saw he had also been wearing a FF helmet, but his had vents. I purchased a new helmet, this one with vents, and discovered why he had looked so dry. The vents actually work! You don't really notice them too much until after you have been stopped for several minutes, like at a lonnng stoplight when you start to sweat. As soon as you move there is a cool breeze over the top of your head.

I have had two helmets with vents. They were different brands and both were an improvement over helmets with no vents. And they also protect your head from the rays of the sun. That may, or may not, be important to most people. But after my experience with a malignant melanoma, and an oncologist's advice to always wear long sleeves or sunscreen, it is my choice.

folks "cut down" other folks just because......
maybe over the bike.... over the model, maybe the color....... usually because they are insecure about THEIR choices, so they make themself feel better by cutting down others.

Now... you FRIENDS will cut you down, but that will be, based on actual knowledge, or just general good nature.....

I wear a helmet, and while in your fine state, I still wore my helmet, whether the locals approved or not. My head.... my choice

I have worn a helment since my first bike in 1967, and there were some really dorky helments back then. You could only get a white Bell. I generally wear a half helment for daily riding unles it is pretty cold, then I use a modular full face. I wear the modular on any road trip, it cuts down on the wind noise, and the stray bug that gets by the windshield. My wife wears her modular all the time. Chose what ever helment you like, and wear it. Your head is more important than being cool looking.

I wear a full face all of the time. I am often tempted and very rarely (around the block or less than a mile down the street) will I not wear a helmet. I just prefer the bugs on the face shield rather than my face, and I have too much to lose to not wear a helmet.
