I bought my old man a 2009 Road King for Christmas this year, but made a critical oversight. I knew he hadn't ridden in 20 years or so and the MSF/ABATE courses are shut down until April.

I know my dad will take the bike out and was wondering if anyone had any solutions, knew any MSF coaches, or any Vets that wouldn't mind taking my dad under their wing a little.

Any ideas?

 

Why don't you get him some Ride like a Pro DVD's to watch. It might tide him over til spring, I don't have them but I understand they are very informitive.

 

+1 Very informative DVD. I have RLP 5. BUT...There is no substitute for actual hands-on training though.......

 

This is your 'pennance' for living in Hi. I sorta 'envy' you, BUT I did live over there for several years, myself. (70's)
Stationed at Pearl, but lived as many places as one could imagine. LOVED it, but I missed the seasons, and ain't ever gonna have the $$ to move back.

I am sitting here' chucklin' outloud. OH, I know more than one 'biker' in Colo. It is quite a 'visual' to picture your Dad, saddling up, and riding in amongst some 'patches'. BUT then, maybe he's more into that than either one of us thiinks. On the + side, many are vets.

DVDs are a sound idea.
AND there's always the Harley Davidson FORUM to "KILL" some time.
PLUS he'll be 'real' knowledgeable after his 'tour' here.

 

Don't some HD dealerships offer an MSF-like course now? More expensive than MSF if I remember right, but not the long wait to get in the last I heard.

o and P.S. - crap will you adopt me and buy me a roadking?!?!?!?!?!

 

I hope someone in Denver will help. I would here. I'd like to get him on a bit smaller bike for a few hours and do the basics like MSF, then after a couple of days do it again on the Harley.

That's how my wife learned - MSF on their 250, then MSF intermediate on my Deuce, then she got right on a Wide Glide, no problems.

Anyone?

 

I'd trade Hawaii for Colorado any day. Of course, my hands are probably going to turn black from frostbite. I took the RK out for a few rides while I was home. The Harley Dealers have the classes, but again, not till April. Maybe the DVDs will work a little. I'll cry if he puts her down...

Just a wild *** idea here, but what if you contacted the local P/D or Fire Dept in your father's neighbourhood and explained the situation? I would think either someone in motorcycle division or someone in the Red Knights should be delighted to get your dad up and cruisin'!

SciFiGuy - Thanks a bunch. I missed that T3RG school in my search. Ya know, It's my dad's bike, but that wouldn't stop me from crying over scratched up chrome....oh yeah...his injuries, too haha I'll look into the motorcycle cops, too.
