when did they start using the digital milage ?
On the sportster when did they start using the digital milage ? The oldest that i know of is '95 but i may b wrong. So i haven't owned a hd yet but i plan on getting one this summer. I Want a 883, this will be my first bike, i do have some experience but i know its different than riding on the road, i have ben riding dirtbikes since i was 5. so idk what year i want, i have done plenty of research, i kno in 04 i think they changed the motor mounts over to poly something and it makes the ride much less vibration, i dont care if i get an o4 or not, my max price range i think will be 4500. i dont want anyting older than a 90 which i belive they started putting the 5speeds in that year.

Sportsters got the 5 speed transmission in '91.
Correct that '04 and later Sportsters are rubber mounted engines, and it makes a huge difference at highway speeds. The nickname "Milwaukee Vibrator" is appropriate on '03 and older. More than 2 hours on a ridgid mount Sportster and your hands go numb. Rubber mount & you can ride with the cruisers all day (as long as you can get somebody else to haul your gear).
Fuel injection in '06/'07. If you wan't to play with mufflers, get a carb'd bike. SERT/PC-III + Dyno time gets expensive when you want to mod an EFI bike.
That narrows your choices down to '04 - '06.
IMO, an '883 Sporty is a good transition for someone that has learned how to handle a dirt bike. Dirt develops reflexes that no BRC can provide, so you won't sweat the emergency stops or peg grinds that make BRC graduates drop a bike. An 883 is cheaper to insure (even after you replace the jugs and pistons to make it a 1200), and for a daily ride, a Sporty is much more fun than the baggers.
You've probably noticed since you've been shopping that HD's really hold their value. Unless you really trash the bike, you can always sell and upgrade if you find yourself wanting a bigger scoot.

For $4500 you should be able to go much newer than a 90. I sold my 97 883 four years ago for $4800 after paying $4500 for it a year earlier. Check ebay to get an idea of the going rate today.
If I were you, I would take a serious look at the Dyna family. Much more versatile than the Sporty, and you might find something used there in your price range.

1995 was the first year of digital speedos. I think the complete range changed to them that year.
