Why LEO’s ride bikes
#22
There are at least two departments here in Georgia where motor officers have to buy their own ride. All they get is the discount Harley gives on a police edition Road King (not the "Peace Officer" one, the actual police bike.) They also have to buy their own helmets, boots and jackets.
And yes, the reason motor officers write so many more tickets is because traffic is pretty much all they do. Think about it.........when was the last time you saw a police bike at the scene of a bank robbery or home invasion?

Reckon thats one way to take care of it ...
Still makes no sense , course , if Ga is anything like it is here , it dont hafta make sense

If they have to buy their own ride, they are able to pocket all the money from the escort duty (funerals and such) during their off-time hours... It's not like the city/county/state is paying for the vehicle, so they can't really say anything about what the officer does with it during their off-time hours... Some officers make more in the off-time hours than they do in their regular hours... Some of the officers that drive cars on the other hand have been known to be fairly good at "working the system" so that their overtime pay exceeds their normal pay...

You might want to check those numbers of Motor cops again as that would be a Extremely High number of Traffic Officers period, but esp Motor cops for a town so small. Most 25K population towns in the South would only have between 40 (low crime city) to maybe 80-90 (high crime city) total officers period and for 15%-25% of the total force to be on motorcycles would be very out of the norm. I retired from LE in a city in the South with a population of 440,000 and we had 700+ officers and only Eight (8) were on motorcycles.

Yeah around here Motor Cops are traffic duty only, so they have no other assignment than to write tickets. They also take Major Injury crash investigations and are on call-out for that 24/7. Those bikes take a beating with jack-rabbit starts, numerous starts each day, stop n go city traffic, etc. The individual officer and his riding style has alot to do with the bike's condition at the end of it's life expectancy. Some guys are harder on their equipment than others.
