Not that hard just takes time
This is probably a 3+ hour job (I did this project under $400)
You'll need a couple of things:
Bars
Risers (depending??)
Throttle cables (2)
Wire extensions & "zip ties"
Break cable components and break fluid.
Clutch cable
Lube fluid (for trans and primary)
Things you need to know:
How to take off your exhaust and trans cover (for clutch cable)
How to adj. your clutch (for clutch cable)
How to solder wires (for wiring).
How to bleed brakes
How to adj your throttle cables.
How to take off the gas tank to route wires.
First: determine how high you want to go, include the riser height. I have 1 inch risers with 16inch bars. They come to my shoulders (I'm 5'10). A lot of time peoples concern is the bars level with the shoulders. What I would do is find some bikes that already have Apes on then sit on the bike (ASK PERMSION FIRST).
Second: determine length of cable, wires you'll need. I used 8 overs with 16 bars and 1 inch riser and still have some slack in the cable/wires, which is good. I could have gotten away with 6 overs (Please note I have a Softail). If you put 14 bars, depending on risers, I would probably start looking at 6 overs for cables and wires.
Third: go to town:
Couple words of advice
Solder your wires and use wire heat shrink. When they’re all soldered use plenty of electrical tape. You would be surprised on were you‘ll find water. I found water in my electric wiring after a heavy day of rain riding before I did my Ape job.
For the brakes
I used Russell Adapters and ran a nylon line. There is a lot of ways to do this, make sure you don’t have any leaks and bleed the breaks.
Wiring
A little extras slack is never bad. When I soldered my wires I had about three inches of slack.
I hope this helps
