RE: Ipod installed, music in helmet!!!
Just for info, nothing more.
It's illegal in CA to ride with 2 headphones.
2 earplugs is ok, 1 headphone and 1 earplug is ok.
I don't know about socal, but I know a few people that have been stopped in SF for headphones because the wires were visible.

It is illegal in many states to have anything other than communications in your helmet. and even then only rider to passenger communication. Check the laws in your state and any state you travel to. I think the chart Easyriders has every month in their magazine lists where it is and isnt legal.

I use my normal earphone when on long trips... I can hear the music and the stuff around me. No problems whatsoever.

My helmet is a Shoei RX(or something like that).

I use the small Sony speaker box for Ipods/radios etc... attached the radio to the box with velcro.plug in the speaker box to the radio with supplied cord. The speaker box is battery powered .All of this fits in the windshield bag with the lid up.This helps reflect the music toward you. Its not real loud but it can be heard enough to tap your foot on the foorboards .

Man I am so glad to know I am not the only iPOD addict out there. I find I am more focused when I wear mine ridding. I depend appropriately on my eyes for saftly. I cannot hear anything when riding anyway and I generally have to cover my ears because I get ear aches if I do not.
I just stick mine in my pocket or leave it on my bealt with buds in my ears and my lycra head sock over it all. It can be a pain to select stuff but I generally just do a shuffle.
Mine is a 5th gen video Pod. The hard drive are very solid. Not a problem when it comes to taking shocks. However I would be a little more careful about bike mounting the Pod because you will have a lot of shock transfering to the iPOD. It would be better to keep it on your person.

Can you hear anything around you when you have them on? Seems dangerous.
