Gas Mileage

RE: Gas Mileage
I have a 2001 injected FatBoy, stock except for SE pipes. I have an Excel file where I track the mileage everytime I fill up or add fuel.
I get 44.5 average in town. I've seen it get 47 sitting on the freeway at 60-65MPH no wind.
The entire time I've owned it I'd put a 44/47 MPG sticker on it if the EPA asked me to rate it.
I really can see a difference (lower mileage) if I get it into the 70+ range. I've ridden from where I live (Tucson) to Phoenix, AZ and the speedlimit on I10 is 75 in parts. It really does show up in lower mileage.
I have a bad tendancy overfill the tank to where a small amount comes out of the overflow. I'm working on not doing this. Point is, that if a small amount of fuel was pressurized out, it would show up in MPG calculation. I have a friend with slightly different sized (than factory) rear tires also...and he has more than once forgot that his speedo/odo is affected by it when quoting me fuel economy numbers.

Did a little test today that I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. Since there is always a lot of questions about mileage, I thought I'd try a comparison test. Had to make a run this morning most of the way on 4 lane running about 70-75mph. with traffic and the windshield on the bike, it was 126.4mi.and took 3.053gal.of gas that comes out to 41.4mpg. This is about average for every time I’ve checked it, witch has always been on long rides with both 2 and 4 lane roads. This afternoon had to make another run so I took off the windshield before I left, this was to be all two lane roads. When I got back it was 91.8 mi.and 1.832 gal. of gas to fill it up that comes out to 50.109mpg. running at 60 mph. and no windshield. I'm not sure witch made the most difference but this is a pretty good jump from 41.4 to50.1 mpg. by pulling the windshield and dropping from 75 to 60mph. myself I think the windshield is what made the big difference.

RE: Gas Mileage
I haven't been able to get out of the high 30's in mileage. Maybe its the way I ride, I don't know or care, cuz its WAY BETTER than my two trucks. One gets 9 and the other gets 14[&:]

I have an 05 Springer with efi and last year, when I was keeping track, I was averaging about 50 mpg.

RE: Gas Mileage
I would guess the 15MPH drop in speed made the difference.
Wind drag against your upright chest my be more than against the angled windshield, and I think wind resistance increases exponentially (sp?) above 50 MPH. Hence one of the reasons behind the 1970's 55MPH national speed limit (streaching my memory here back to all those MPG studies after the first oil embargo 1971-2ish??)
