I live in Martinez, CA and this town is traditionally a very biker friendly place. Nearly the entire downtown economy consists of antique shops, restaurants, and 'biker bars.' Port Costa, right up the road, is another traditionally biker friendly community. I find it unfortunate that the government bows down so quickly to the few individuals that have a problem with the noise rather than sticking with the majority that don't care or have a financial stake in the outcome of the issue. Furthermore, I have yet to see crackdowns for excessively loud subwoofers in vehicles in this area. And I'd hazards a guess that there are just as many, if not more, people ratlling windows out of houses with their subwoofers as there are vehicles with loud exhaust. But, I guess mommy and daddy don't want to complain to the police about junior having loud music since they'll be stuck with the fine so they complain about exhaust noise. It is unfortunate.

Maybe a bad choice of words
I'm not suggesting we go that far but I can kinda understand why there are some folks who get a little tired of someone on a built 103" Stroker with Samson Crack pipes ripping up and down their street at 2:00am in the morning.
This is what I meant "policing" ourselves.

I've been known to kill my engine at a stop light, rip off a good one next to a cage with an open window and then fire my bike back up. They nearly always look straight ahead and roll their window up.

Vrooom, vroom, vroom!
I read not too long ago about how the City of Oakland, CA had installed all their police patrol bikes with louder pipes--due to safety reasons.
I have a pumped up engine with 2 in 1 thunder headers and can't keep track anymore of how many times I've avoided accidents due to the loud pipes.
