Default Extending wire harness

Hey guys,

Today I took everything off of my bike to begin my winter projects, first thing up is new 12" apes. I've got the bars drilled and wire harnesses off and ready to extend and solder tomorrow, my question is how do I get the connectors off of the end of the harnesses so I can feed them internally? Is there a special tool that I will need to remove them?

Thanks for any input.
David

Get an HD manual, they ain't cheap but they do detail what you need to do and how you need to do it. There are special tools, in some cases, that are needed. You might get lucky and find something that works, but if you aren't lucky it will more than likely cost you more in the long run than the right tool.

Thanks for the input guys, I seem to rememb somewhere that there was a special pry tool or something made just for the job. On the wire side the hole is in the shape of a telephone jack making me think there is a clip or something holding it from coming out. On the other end where the connector is exposed there is a small hole next to each individual connector making me think I should push through the hole from that side.

Im going to get a manual tomorrow just to be on the safe side, I was just looking for any tips or tricks on how everyone else did it and what tools they used to do it.

This is on a 2008 sportster by the way, but I think most of the control harnesses are the same except for the throttle by wire ones......

Thanks again
David

Get a service, turn to page 8-72 in the Electrical section near the back of the manuel. Top of page : SWITCH REPAIR/REPLACEMENT, that will tell you all!
Have A Nice Day L.ray

The tool looks nice, but I used just a jeweler's screwdriver. You will thank me afterwards for this: Before you take any wires out of the Deutche connector make a diagram of color-codes for EACH side. Draw the connector so you know top from bottom and life will be better! As far as taking the wires out of the connectors themselves, there is a water seal that loosely holds in the face plate of the connector. remove the seal and gently pry the plate off. Inside the connector you'll see a release next to each pin. this is what you move with the tool or screwdriver. Stagger the solder points for the extentions to make the whole deal easier to slide. Good luck.
