FORT WALTON BEACH - A lifelong dream came true Friday for Lois Chai: She celebrated her 85th birthday by riding on a Harley-Davidson.
The lively resident at Westwood Retirement Resort took her first ride while decked out in a leather vest and matching helmet.
It was her sister LoRaine Setterberg's idea. As they traveled together over the years, Setterberg said Chai always commented how much fun riding a motorcycle looked and how free the riders seemed to be. So Setterberg decided that her sister would ride a motorcycle on her birthday.
"She looked forward to a bike ride forever," she said.
Watching her sister for the first time on the back of a motorcycle, Setterberg said, "she looked like she was 16".
With the help of Alicia Davis, Westwood's financial services director, Chai was greeted by a group of motorcyclists at the McDonald's at Beal Parkway and Green Acres Road. She hopped on the back of one of the bikes and rode with the group to Westwood down the block. She was greeted by applause from fellow residents as she took a turn steering the bike into the atrium for her birthday party.
"I always looked at them and admired them," Chai said of motorcyclists. "I didn't think I have to wait until I was 85 to ride one."
Chai said she was excited about her first ride and was not scared at all. She added that she was thrilled to fulfill one of her dreams and said the ride made her feel more like she was 35 than 85.
"I'm happy. After all my 85 years, I rode a real motorcycle with real motorcycle people."
Her next goal in life? "Well, I guess I'll go inside and eat some birthday cake."

Now that is cool. That is one great thing about Harley people. These guys took the time to take this lady for a ride. The local HOG group here in town goes to nursing homes and one of the guys has a trike that he uses to take the residents for rides, and they love it.
