Default chicago to washington dc - suggestions?

planning on taking a trip to washington dc as early as possible next year.

remember my daughter got transferred there, and that i am babysitting her sportster while she is gone.

so next year, as early as i can, i am planning on taking a trip there. more for the trip than site seeing and such. that friend, steve, who had the tire problem on his honda shadow has said he wanted to go.

so i am thinking of taking 2 days there and 2 days back (approx 450 miles per day). steve has never seen DC so i said, lets just spend one day there for a tease of what is there. maybe do the mall.

so i am looking for any comments about routes on the way there and back. and thing along the way that is a 'must'. and roads that are great. any roads to avoid.

whats the earliest that you would think it is feasible to go.

i have driven there and back a couple of times, but it was not for enjoyment and it was over 25 years ago - i am thinking a lot has changed (oh really!).

appreciate any and all comments (seeing as winter is upon us need to plan for next year).

also working on a old rt66 trip, sturgis, lake michigan circle, and maybe even a lake superior loop. have to work those in around the napa valley and vegas and other DC trips with the wife (remember she doesn't ride, although she did go to sturgis in the support vehicle). HMMM, i might have to take some unpaid vacation.

Since your in chi-town... Taking i-90 is probably a good idea... I hear its a great ride near the lakes.

Or you can take i-70... Just be sure you wave when you get into ohio, from indiana, thats my folks backyard, right after the welcome arch.

"whats the earliest that you would think it is feasible to go."

If I could predict the weather that well I wouldn't be sitting here at this job!

It all depends on how much ice, snow, salt and cold you can handle.

I would think April could be a safe bet.

Well if your comin across I-90 and I-80, drop south on I-79 you would be passin within 5 miles of me! I would ride with you to Morgantown then you could head east across 68. Probably about an 8 hr ride from Chicago to Wexford exit on I-79 stay over night.

Last year went from N IL to Charlottesville, VA for work. hard to avoid Chicago expressway so just suvk it up till you get into IN. You can take some nice 2 lanes into Indy then head west. Once I got to Xenia, Oh I took US 35 into Charleston, WV That was day 1. absolutely incredible ride. then took the WV tollroad into VA. and you have plenty of routes into DC
