It's been my experience that the 12-14 year old boys are always left out. I talked to one of the Marines working the drive last year and she confirmed it.
We did a Christmas Angel tree a couple of years ago. One boy wanted "Tools, you know, wrenches and stuff." With my son's Pep Boys discount, for $50 the kid got a good set of tools and a Hot Rod Magazine book on making big power from from small block GM engines.
Toys for Tots, you just have to guess. Christmas Angel is usally a little easier. We do both every year.

A lot of riders get a stuffed animal toy and bungee cord it to the handlebars. Some get bigger toys and have the follow cars/trucks carry them there.

I had two daughters sooooo, I and the wife usually go for the Barbie dolls. They always loved them and I doubt much has changed. AND they are really easy to carry on a bike!

Action figures and dolls. Avoid anything needing batteries.

I like the idea of thinking of the older kids as well.

Stuff animals are overplayed and most toy drives end up with tons of those so be different.

Happy Holiday giving,
Primo

Looking foreward to my first Toy Run this year also.

Since I've no children of my own I try to give a little something each year to the kids in local shelters or grab a boy or girl from the Angel Tree at the local mall.

PLEASE !!!! PLEASE !!!! As someone / "club" that is running the toy run this year. No more stuffed animals. Everyone brings stuffed animals. Not that they are not appreciated but that 6 foot stuffed dinosour is tough to find a kid for. Lots of times these kids move around alot and need toys they can pack up and move on. I try and get games like monopoly and clue and just anything a group of kids could find amusing and distracting. Tonka toys and tough stuff like that is good and like was mentioned think about those young men out there 13 - 15 and include them if ya can. God bless ya, some of these kids , we are all they got for Xmas.

I usually try and find something that suits a wide age group or is non-gender specific. Sometimes I'll give 2 or 3 gifts just depends on what I find when I'm shopping.
And always put a little cash in the jar. It's a good cause, give what you can.

I usually donate a couple model cars or planes. I always liked them when I was a kid.
