Default Chrome or Stainless Hardware

Hey there...

What do people prefer - chrome or stainless bolts?

I see that the big books have either and I want to punt the zinc plated crap that Harley puts on. Don't really care about the cost - just want the best looking and the longest lasting. I seem to recall that the chrome job can be pretty cheesy sometimes and the insides of hex heads can start to rust.

Chrome is the way to go. You can use Hot Popper is much cheaper and looks good also.

Polished Stainless is the way to go. I think that Diamond Engineering makes the best. www.depss.com They are sold through Drag Specialties.

Stainless all the way. Looks better, lasts longer.

Cheers!

If they do a good polish job, stainless will look better for far longer.

Polished stainless will do the trick the first time & every time. I'm big on zero rust.

OK. Looks like stainless is ahead at the moment.

Am I @#*&ed if I replace one at time - take one bolt off, clean threads, locktite (if necessary), re-torque, repeat for the next one (won't do headbolts or other critical stuff right now)? I'd hate to make this an effort where I have to go through a round of gaskets, fluids and general mess to get it done. Of course, I could have done this when it was colder...and I don't want to wait until it gets colder again...

Stainless is going to be better because it is the same material all the way through, right? Whereas chrome is just plating... I have that right, don't I?

I have a question that I would like to piggy back on here... I want to replace the ugly zinc bolt for my swing arm pivot... Can I just replace the heads? Or do I have to swap out that whole axle? If I recall it is actually a bar that is threaded on both sides and not like a huge bolt, right?

I've run stainless for over 30 years. Some stuff I bought all polished and purtied up from catalog joints, and some I bought at the local hardware store, then polished it myself. Use the correct grade for the end-use, and you won't be sorry. Stay away from 410 stainless as it will rust some, especially compared to 304 or 316.
