getting it started.

getting it started.
Im trying to get my 750 intruder running. Just curious as to what u guys do when starting up a bike after it has been sitting for a long time. I completely restored the bike, new batt, cleaned everything, new fluids... now just got to turn it on.
I was told not to touch the throttle when starting the bike, is this true?
also, what do u do if you flood the engine? How do u unflood it?
heres a description of what I did.
Today I used a socket wrench and spun the alternator rotor bolt to move the pistons up and down a little, I assume this is what it means to spin the engine. I did this early today and was easy to rotate. After I tried to start the bike again it became harder to rotate it. I checked the spark plugs, both were fine and made a blue spark.
When I went to start it, I gave it a little throttle to see what would happen. I heard the engine rev and some smoke appeared from the engine. I stopped because I wasn't sure if I was doing damage or not. I did spray a little wd40 into the engine through the spark plug holes, I heard this would help free up the pistons. The old problem of it leaking fuel stopped, I assume this was because the engine was flooded and when I let the bike sit it slowly went away. The battery is new, fully charged, and connected properly with star washers, so I dont think jumping it with a car would do anything different.
The bike doesnt want to start. I hear the exhaust a little when I hold down the starter button, but it doesn't want to catch.
Ive been working on the bike since the summer and im so close to getting in running, any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you pulling the choke as well. When our intruder is cold, it won't start without a little choke. I usually wick the throttle a couple of times, pull the choke, then start it without any throttle.

Does the fuel valve have a vacuum pump? I know whenever I go fire up the old Night Hawk I open all the carb drains and crank it till I get fuel to the first two carbs, close them and continue till the others start draining and by that time it is usually picking up the first two cyl. Close the other drains and it picks up the other two cylinders. I know I always have to use the enricher 1/2 way when it is cold and all the way if the temp is below 50. This is a Honda 4 cylinder so this might not apply.

Pumping, twisting the throttle won't do nothing because you don't have an accelerator pump, pull the enrichner **** out and don't touch the throttle, then try starting it. Once it starts slowly push in the **** and keep it running. The 800 Intruder I had was very cold blooded.
