no substitute for the right tool
I did my first oil change this weekend(5k service, $64 vs. $275 at dealer) but I had a helluva time getting the oil filter off. I bought a Craftsman oil filter wrench that attaches to a ratchet extension and tightens down on the filter as you try to loosen it. Well, that don't work all that well! I had to improvise by putting a hose clamp around the filter so the p.o.s. filter wrench would grab the filter. Before I do the next oil change, I will buy the HD wrench shown in the shop manual...unless one of the good folks on this forum can show me a better way. I think I saw some threads on this a few months back but I can't remember what tools you guys were using besides the HD brand. Anyone remember? Have a better way? Thanks for the help.

I use Channellock oil filter pliers on my FXST. They work great and you can use them on other oil filters too.

You can get the same type wrench that HD sells for less than $5 at an auto parts store. I took my HD filter with me to make sure I got the correct size. I went with black and saved a couple of bucks.

dont forget to put a little used oil on the oil filter gasket when you put on the new one. and you dont need to crank down with a 1000 ft/lbs either. hand tighten it till its snug. the next time you go to change it, it will be much easier.

The sides to an oil filter puncture very easily...............If you cannot get a hold of the filter, just stick a screw driver through the side and wahlah! instant handle, very easy.
