I have several pair of the Carhartt overhauls, they work well as long as the temp stays above 20 degrees

She will install either leather or nomex on the inside of the legs to keep them from melting on the pipes. I have not had any problem with mine melting with the leather. Nomex is what my turn out gear is in the Fire Dept.

I was doing a commute from NJ to Long Island leaving work at midnight so I know the feeling. I started wearing a insulated bib from Refrigiwear which are designed for folks who work in industrial freezers all day long. Good down to minus 50. Expensive but definitely keep your legs warm.

Chaps are for riding horses. If or when you ever slide and roll around on the ground do you think chaps will protect you? Buy a set of leathers. Langlitz offers a great pair of westerns that will protect your 6.

During the change of seasons when it's not quite that cold or hot and requiring insulated coveralls, I wear Under Armour as a base layer. They have different weights you can buy and they take the bite out of the cold acting as a wind blocker when worn under your jeans and/or shirt.
