I hear you! Mine was $150.00 and they only changed the crank (with oil supplied by me, I did the primary and tranny). They have a checklist of everything that's supposed to be checked/inspected/changed at each level of service and some items on the list I didn't feel experienced enough to fool with and/or did not have all the tools, but I'm getting there!

Not worth the price. Get a service manual and do what it says for the 1k maintenance. Most of the 1K items are to check. Rarely do they need adjustments. By the way that is the reason that far to many service departments just do the oil and filter then give the bike a sun tan in the lot.

The problem is how would you know unless you watched them do the service. I let the dealer do my 1000 mile service and it cost me $332 and I know they didn't do everything because when I did the 5000 myself I found out that they didn't grease the neck bearings like it said to do in the service manual at the 1000. I wonder what else they skipped, who knows. I do know they changed the tranny oil since I provided them with Redline Shock Proof Heavy and it looked like Pepto Bismol when I checked it. So maybe the only thing they didn't do was the neck bearings but I doubt it.
My manual says to check the neck bearings at 1000, not grease them. In any event, the service and parts manuals are the best HD investment you can make. Do the service yourself if you can and maintain receipts and records.

Typically you can get them from the dealership.

Have your dealer do the 1st service. Not having proof of it being done can be cause to not provide warranty support. Don't be pennywise and pound foolish. Do the others yourself, but let the dealer do the 1k.

Why throw your money away if you don't have to? I can understand not wanting to do it yourself (not my cup of tea personally!), but there's no reason to pay full price when you can get more often than not a better quality service from an indy shop! And guess what: you're still covered by the warranty (for that matter you still would be even if you did it yourself!)
