Go and get yourself some good ski clothing - especially the pants. They are made to block the wind and will be a lot cheaper than HD stuff. I have worn my ski pants when it gets real cold here. I agree with everyone about the fairing too - keep the wind off is the trick.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the tips of cold weather riding. I live in Pennsylvania and the cold weather is coming soon.

Be careful with ski pants. They will partially disappear when they touch your exhaust pipe. I know from personal experience.

Leather is very good providing you can handle the emotional consequences of a cow or steer having to give it's life for your comfort.

My boots are thinsulate and gore-tex, gaunlets are thinsulate. I ride until it is below 32 or there is salt on the road. I ride a RK and have fork deflectors and soft lowers for the cold, also.
Yea, I used to do this too...then I discovered the heated jacket and gloves and never looked back

Helmet, balaclava, heated jacket, leather jacket, heated gloves, long johns and wool socks. Good down to 10 degrees, tested by me.

Start with a good layer close to your body. I have been using UnderArmor ColdGear. It works better than any other long underwear that I have tried. After that I just use light layers so I can adjust as I ride. The morning rides this past week were at around 30 with the rides home being in the 60's. Nice to be warm in the am and comfortable when it warms up. Oh, get some Alpaca socks. The Alpaca fibers are not scratchy like wool, are warmer and more water resistant than wool and are hand washable.

I just picked up First Gear's Teton jacket for winter riding. Waterproof, windproof, armor inserts as well as kevlar reinforcement in the elbows and shoulders It has a removable liner that doubles as a jacket all by itself. It's awfully nice (a bit expensive though). I bought mine from motorcycle-superstore.com , 30 bucks off list price, no tax, free shipping.
