Default Electrospaghettiosis of the wiring

OK so I'm trying to help a buddy out here, his 01 Road King Police doesn't charge. I look at the voltage regulator and it's got gooo spewing out from something melting inside it, and one of the wires has rubbed through and hit the frame.
Easy fix, right? Wrong-O Mary Lou. Any suggestions before I make him douse 60 bucks on the electrical manual and miss bike night tonight? He just bought the bike, no idea of history, and he's doing that pee-pee dance that 8 yr olds do at Christmas. I wanted to be a hero, help me earn my spandex suit, would ya?
Thanks for any thoughts.

put the smoke back in the wires, everything works until someone lets the smoke out. Now, maybe someone could copy and fax you the diagram you need.

Sounds like you already diagnosed a wire shorted to ground that burned out the regulator. That jiz coming out of the regulator indicates serious overheating of the regulator. You only have the regulator, stator, battery and associated wiring. If you have eliminated the possibility of loose or poor connections, replace the regulator, repair and inspect the wiring. If he still has probs, stator.

heh heh heh...yeah I actually added TWO bottles of smoke and STILL couldn't get any pressure. Does Lucas make a synthetic smoke stabilizer?

But seriously, are there any sources for the manual free on line? Or like you said, if anybody can send me the info electronically that would be grand as well.

ya mon, de regulator is already on there to da tune of 235.00...I don't see any typical butchered wiring for Police bikes. Got stats on the stator resistances and locations of components? Thanks guys!

I will almost bet that the wire that rubbed through the frame is on the bottom right frame rail. That is not all that uncommon. Happened to one of our riders two years ago in the middle of nowhere Colorado. Rode to the nearest shop and bought a new voltage regulator and changed it at a highway pull off. You can splice the regulator wire as a quick fix but I would at a minumum solder (s) the wire and use heat shrink if you don't replace the entire wire. Hope that helped!

Good advice above, if you want to be a hero Zuel just buy him a shop manual not a electrical manual ( electrical info is inside it) and fix it for him,, instant hero. Oh welcome to the forums, you might want to introduce yourself in the New Members Section if this is your first time here.

Check the stator B4 you throw the new reg on, just to make sure.
Disconnect the plug. Set your meter to AC volts, scale greater than 100. Start the motor. Touch test leads to pins(not polarity sensitive)Should be about 25 or so at idle, but goes up to 60+ when you blip the throttle. If the stator is putting out, then reg should solve the prob. But check the stator just in case when the reg shorted, it took the stator with it. Not likely, but possible. If stator NOT putting out, post back, will post procedure to test what is wrong.
Might wanna repair/replace the bare war tho.
Once you have that, check ALL batt connections, and test. Should have 14+ at batt with motor running.
Short synopsis, but you git the jest. Any ?'s, come back and post some more.

Yeah I already put the new regulator on, like I said it was obviously burnt. The wire that rubbed through was in fact on the right, and the new regulator has a complete harness so that got replaced defacto. Thanks for the stator outputs, I'll check that. Where IS the stator connector on this thing? Three yellow wires like most other vehicles? Or what color?
