DOT Helmets or Novelty?

Ok well I guess Im going to start with I've been on bike street and dirt for 33 yrs. I always wore a helmet when I was a kid(till 18) when it became my choice. I have and always will wear a full face DOT helmet when I ride off road dirt bikes/4 wheelers. Now since I got my licence for the road(23yrs now) I have had rice rockets and pretty much all the others( now riding Harley). When I road Rice I only worn a helmet when I was on the highway. I no studies say most accidents happen within 3 miles of your house but I thought of it as the speed that I was traveling and I felt safer. I used that rule up until about 1 yr ago. I have 2 boys ages 13/15 both brought up around bikes and 4 wheelers and always told to wear thier helmets or no riding. The state we live in no helmet law. My 15 yr old is of age to get his licence and is all ready to go(grrr)! about a year ago as I was leaving to run up town to do some errands, I got on to the bike got ready to leave as the boys headed out on thier dirt bikes when my oldest headed out on his with no helmet.....to shorten this up. I decided that if my kids are going to ride as a parent I would feel better knowing that they have helmets on. So as they have seen dad not wear one I made a pack with them. We will wear helmets as long as we are on a bike of any kind no matter how long the distants. The helmet kind is open to what ever kind you feel comfortible in and will wear cause if any of us get caught by the others then the pack is broke and no helmets! So after yrs without I wear a non-dot german helmet because I dint like the way the dot one fit. So I feel you should wear a helmet if its the law and if it makes you feel safer as a rider, as someone else said with or without non-dot or dot, full or half when its your time its your time. We all ride to feel the wind and freedom so do what feels right to you/and your family. Enjoy and ride safe which ever you choose.

I live in Illinois (no helmet law) and communicate regularly to Missouri (helmet law). So yeah, I always wear one to work. But when I stay in Illinois, I oftentimes don't wear one. But sometimes I do. lol... Depends on my mood.

I live in a helmet law state so I wear a DOT helmet (ACC). I figure if I have to wear one then I mine as well wear one that meets the requirements. On top of that I figure if the worst happens and insurance comes into play then I don't have to worry about them not paying due to me not meeting the requirements.

I wear a fullface by choice. I've had enough head injuries doing other things - skiing, skating, cycling, just plain clumsy around the house, etc. - to not want to take the chance of bouncing my melon on the asphalt.

If I'm gonna wear one, it's gonna be a DOT helmet.

OOOOOOH that's purdy! I'll bet it can get really noisy when it's raining. What do you use to keep it so shiny? Can I get one with Mauve trim instead of Gold?

I admit it's more fun to ride w/o a helmet. But I think it's kind of silly when a simple fall off a bike can cause a brain hemotoma that can kill you. I knew a teenager in my community that fell off a bicycle and died from one.
I put my seatbelt on when I drive my cage, I wear eye protection when I'm using my grinder in the garage, I wear hearing protection when I'm shooting my gun, I wear a condom when I'm with a prostitute (not really).
And I wear at least a DOT 1/2 helmet when riding my Heritage.
