Default Hole in Gas Tank

My bike is in the shop after a fairly major crash. My issue is the insurance company wants to repair, instead of replace, my gas tank.

The damage looks slight, but is a puncture into, but not through the tank. It looks like an ice pick was placed against the side of the tank and a hammer struck the pick making a sharp pointed indention into the tank itself.

I don’t feel this is safe, but a repair shop, (not a Harley dealer) says “No problem.”

Has anyone experienced this before?

I don’t feel comfortable with the repair.

If that is all the insurance will cover you're dinked... I used to weld fuel tanks for the Lotus Super 7 and I can assure you, repairing a tank is no problem... however... if it was my bike, I would try to strike a deal with the repair shop for a new tank... ask them how much the insurance is covering for the repair and give them the difference for a new tank.

Politely insist on a new tank or at minimum a good used tank.

A tank can easily be repaired but a repaired tank isn't as good as an un-injured tank. If they don't allow a new or used replacement the only recourse is to drop them and go with another company. They won't care but its the only statement you can make.

What company are we talking about? We all need to know.
